new details this noon in the search for a gunman who went on a deadly shooting spree. police have just released a new sketch. this is here of the man they are looking for. good afternoon, i'm steve sanders. >> i'm allison payne. wgn's nancy loo is live in crown point, indiana where authorities have just wrapped up a news conference. >> reporter: well, allison and steve, hundreds of tips have been called in since tuesday's deadly shooting spree but none have panned out so a short time ago authorities released a new sketch of the killer they are looking for. the revised sketch is based on information from witnesses and

one of the victims, the lake and will county sheriffs are earn urging anyone with information to contact them immediately. authorities believe he is a man in his 40s driving a light colored chevy cheyenne pick up truck with indiana plates which was last seen on tuesday in lowell soon after the shootings of three men in illinois and indiana. one victim was killed. two others hospitalized. police are hoping someone will be able to identify the killer. and we heard from will county sheriff roy dominguez urging people to hopefully be able to recognize that suspect from the sketch. and so they will know who they are looking for at least. bailed on evidence from the two shooting scenes, they have concluded that the two

shootings were likely linked. but the bottom line at this point they don't know who they are looking for and they don't know where he is. live in crown point, nancy loo, wgn news. a 17-year-old boy is on life support after someone beat him with a baseball bat in the back of the yards neighborhood. it happened yesterday afternoon in the 1700 block of west 49th street. the boy was walking home with a group of friends when a red suv began following them. a passenger from that suv got out and chased the teen down before hitting him in the head with a bat. police are looking for his attacker. argument in albany park neighborhood turns deadly. 28-year-old patrick butler was shot in the back just before midnight. this happened in the 1500 block of north albany. he was taken to the hospital where he later died. initial reports say butler had been arguing with two other men when one of them pulled out a gun and shot him. police are investigating no arrests have been made.

south side man accused of kidnapping his son is under arrest but the toddler is missing. 14 month old dontrelle johnson was last seen on monday. his father was arrested after refusing to return the boy to his mother and for threatening to hurt him. the roseland man won't give up the toddlash's location. dontrelle described as three feet tall. he weighs 27 pounds and has a dark birth mark in the center of his forehead. investigators are still going through the wreckage of a small plane that crashed into a fitness center in naperville. wgn's julian crews is live now in naperville with the latest. >> people continue to marvel at how miraculous this crash landing was. nobody was killed. two people were seriously injured. however, they suffered broken bones and serious lacerations but it appears they will be okay. >> reporter: you can see the

export fitness center just three or four football fields north of the airstrip. investigators are working to understand why the single engine plane was unable to clear the building. now when the piper 32r300 crashed into an extended tower just before noon yesterday -- it sent the shock wave through the health club. pilots say one thing is clear, it could have been much worse if lloyd and maureen mckie lost engine power. there is not much that they or any pilot could have done to avoid the building. >> typically a pilot is reluctant to bank the aircraft because banking the aircraft creates drag which can erode what little lift you have. if the aircraft's ability to compromise for some reason, the pilot's only good alternative is to maintain a straight course. >> reporter: the mckies are in serious condition at edward hospital as investigators work to understand what happened. but others are raising the issue of safety with the day

care center at end of the runway at the napier air club airport and three fitness centers -- a fitness center and a busy shopping corridor to the north. the airstrip sits in the middle of a densely populated area here in naperville. folks say there has never been a serious mishap or crash but long time resident we talked to says he wonders if this is a safe place to be. >> some of them come in and they are doing that and on a bad day. even with this area, you know, i think it's too close. >> reporter: that resident telling us he sees the planes skimming fairly close to roadways and some houses in the area. now we were unable to get a comment from members of the napier aero club airport but this seems to be an issue that will be discussed here in the community in the days and weeks to come. now as for the airplane, it has still not been removed from the

scene here. the national transportation safety board, the lead organization in this investigation. in naperville, julian crews, wgn news. poverty is on the rise in suburbia. about one-third of the nation's poor people now live in the suburbs. census dalta shows number of poor people in the suburbs jump by 37% since 2000. that's faster than the national rate and nearly double the city rate. since the recession began in 2007, the number of poor people in the suburbs increased by 1.8 million. that's nearly half a million more than in the cities. cities still do have higher poverty rates in 19 1/2% compared to about 10 1/2% in the suburbs. but the gap is narrowing. former aide to county board president todd stroger is hoping to be released from jail today. carla oglesby is charged with felony theft, money laundering and official misconduct. wgn's muriel clair joins us live now from the cook county criminal court building. well, allison, she will be

released today and she can thank her father for it. after spending three nights in the cook county jail, carla oglesby will get to sleep in her bed for the first time in three nights. 41-year-old oglesby who until her arrest earlier this week was top aide to cook county board president todd stroger is to get out on a $250,000 bond. her family posted the $25,000 required with the state's mandatory proof of its origin and the origin is oglesby's father who got the money from his home line of credit at commerce book -- commerce bank in missouri. now oglesby will re-sign her county job after she was arrested on charges of stealing more than $300,000 in taxpayer money and rigging more than a dozen no bid contracts for her personal gain. authorities say she funneled the $300,000 of taxpayer money to her privately owned company

toxic sludge overrun three hundred imearn villages has reached the danube river. crews are working to salute the sludge. so far no immediate damage is evident in the danube. sludge burst out of a metals plant reservoir monday and tore through local villages. hungary's prime minister visited the village close tots spill site today. he said it would be impour for people to live there again. a report from a presidential commission concludes that the obama administration intentionally misled the american people about the potential disaster

posed by the bp oil spill. the commission's report says the white house refused to let government scientists release their worst case scenario findings in early may. at the time the president senior energy adviser said most of the spilled oil was already gone. there was no evidence to confirm that asessionment. the white house insists it did present the worse case scenario and it wasn't trying to hide the truth. nine years ago today the united states entered into the war in afghanistan. the mission, was in retaliation for the devastating world trade center attacks. and neutralize al qaeda. now the goal is to end the fighting stabilize afghanistan and bring american troops home. polls show most americans oppose the war. afghan president hamid karzai says nato is here and fighting terrorism and there is no result yet. the taliban claims 75% of afghanistan is now under its control. schiller park man was killed tuesday during an

insurgent attack in afghanistan. 23-year-old airman daniel johnson was remembered wednesday as a true hero. he worked for the 30th civil engineer squad disarming bombs. his unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device. while living in schiller park he took classes at tritan college. he planned on becoming an emergency medical technician. a soldier from wheaton was honored with the military's highest honor. the parents of robert miller were in washington to accept the medal of honor for their son. miller was killed by taliban insurgence in afghanistan in 2008. his ewe in the of u.s. and afghan soldiers was ambushed near the pakistan border but it was miller who told the fellow soldiers to fall back while he charged forward and drew enemy fire. he had been hit but still he kept calling out enemy positions. still he kept firing. still he kept throwing his

just keep sharp and get yourself and provoke yourself into saying what's the best thing i can say about this? what is the thing that must be said about this event and then hopefully people will respond. i think also the fact that you say i always disagree with you. they can use you as a reference point. they get to know who you are and they know your opinions one way or the other. >> these days you don't so much make pronouncements from the mountaintop as a conversation starter we get a lot of feedback. used to be the critic would write the review and people would mutter darkly at night. now you get a thousand comments saying what a complete idiot you are. >> you paint such a rosie picture of us. >> the whole idea. >> some way it's a good thing now it's a much more of a discussion leader but i still think people like critics. look at american idol, what is the score, what is that show? an artist and a critic. the movie ratatouille with the critic. >> i think there is a role to

rare sight in arizona. at least four tornado touched down near mesa and flagstaff yesterday. winds reached up to 110 miles per hour. at least 30 homes were destroyed and semi trucks were blown off the roads and train was derailed. most people had to hide under beds or doorways since they don't have basements there. several people were hurt and injuries were not life- threatening. >> this is a weather world turned upside down. for that to happen in october is rare. it's not unheard of but is rare. we checked. the national clie 349ic data center archives all of the tornado reports for the country and indicate that in the entire state of arizona since 1950 there are. hundred 15 tornadoes and only 20 of those have occurred in october. that's 90% of them and that's how unusual it. >> we hope our friends in arizona are okay. >> they are doing fine. the system is finally as is the blocking pattern that has kept us in this gorgeous weather

breaking down. it's a slow process. but you know it's trapped cold pool out there and will show you in a moment that's spinning through the west. produced record rains in parts of california with flooding yesterday. and now as lifting into the central rockies and the northern rockies with big rains in high elevation snows. another storm is out in the east coast but interesting those two systems combined to produce sinking air on a vast scale in this area and when air sinks it warms and dries and thus we have these cloud free skies and unusually warm temperatures. we checked yesterday and the period since june 1 since summer began is the 14th warmest in 140 years of weather history. so we wondered what kind of weather follows that. autumn from this point forward starts turning cooler than normal instead of being above normal and also the winter has a slight edge on being cooler than normal and snowier than normal after such gleers the past. we will see if that works out. that dove tail was la234eu7ba weather which -- lanina

weather. 37 last night at rochelle but everyone else is above 40 at joliet. that was true at o'hare with a low overnight was in the upper 40s. no frost last night and we recovered nicely to 68 today and are headed for 80 tomorrow. today's mid-70s will mark 146th time this year we have been above 70. normal full year only gets 130 70-degree days. we were in bonus territory. 69 at midway. 73 at munster and 66 at lincoln park. there is the view from sauk village and here is arizona. look how the weather has improved. that's prescott. it's windy but that system has lifted out of the area and the last clouds in utah and there is some tornadoes and strong thunderstorms there. continue but that system is starting to lift out of that area as well. here is a look at the temperatures across the metro area. these readings at 12:00 noon are several degrees above normal for this time of year and we have three hours of

heating yet to go. warmth covers much of the center of the country. see the dip of the temperatures in the east. and cool air out west but we were sandwiched in this lovely warm air mass. but look what's going on up north. wie have snow now on the ground. i was looking at environment canada snow cover report and northern north america has snow on the ground. in alaska there is three inches down. we are starting to build that snow pack over which the cool air that will eventually spill in here with winter rides and see tacool air later next week after this warm spell we are going into. we are a degree below where we were 24 hours ago but see the orange that dominates this map and the numbers. this is how much temperatures have changed in the last 24 hours and the orange areas are areas that are warming so that front tawent through last evening and shifted the widths and has shifted and taken us down a few degrees won't be around for longism will warm up tomorrow. northwest winds at five. humidity just 32%. moderate mold spores in the

area. no pollens to report. and an absolutely 100% sunny sky here. the lifting motion the air rising that makes clouds and rain is in this cold air pool out east and there is the one out west that produced the unusual tornadoes. and you can see why this thing is stuck in plaition and the fact that it's stuck means the high pressure in our area and the low pressure out east is stuck as well. we have been sending the warm air and main weather systems to the north of this so this thing is spinning in place but it's starts lifting northward and will be picked up by the main jet stream and we are expecting high pressure to build in greenland next week. that starts buckling the jet stream from canada and brings cooler air down here and gets weather moving. until then this warm dome right here around which the jet stream is blowing is to settle over our area and give us a couple of gorgeous days with all of the big rains out to the west and look at the parade of storms expected to come into the pacific northwest. their wet season definitely

getting underway there. as we look for beautiful weather, though, there is one fly in the ointment that starting to look more and more realistic and that's the slight chance of an afternoon thundershower in spots on sunday. wouldn'tic widespread. and columbus day monday could feature some first fairly widespread showers and thunderstorms in parts of the area. though it wouldn't be an all day rain. 100% sunny day today. not a drop of rain within hundreds of miles of us. few degrees cooler than yesterday but still way above normal. we had a 78 yesterday. we will have a 76 today and stay cooler at the lakefront where a northeast wind will lock in this afternoon. then clear, cooler tonight. bring the clear skies in and drop the winds and keep the air dry as it will be tonight. get cool inland in the 40s but 50 at o'hare. sunny and warmer tomorrow. a west, southwest wind pushes the warmth up to the lakefront. no lake cooling tomorrow. high near 80 at a time of the year when mid-60s is normal and 82 on saturday with one caveat.

if you are at the beaches or along the lakeshore areas the winds will turn southeasterly. that brings them off the water and can keep the lakeshore area in the low 70s. but 82 inland on saturday and marathoners will find mid- to upper 50s as race begins on sunday. we have thousands, tens of thousands of runners in town for the marathon and it looks like a great marathon with bright sunny skies. partly sunny skies and a light south, southwest wind. >> those 50-degree temperatures. >> away from the marathon. >> maybe low 70s by the time the race is over. boy, if you run fast, you take advantage of more of those. >> your incentive. >> you are going out there? >> i will sit it out this year. >> just this year. >> just this year. in stilettos. here is our trivia question today. which president first proposed the decimal currency system that we use today? was it thomas jefferson?

new report shows life expectancy in the united states is lagging behind other developed countries. researchers at columbia university say 45-year-old white women fairs worse. their survival rate was lower than any of the other 12 nations. surprising part of the study

was that smoking obesity, traffic accidents and homicides were not factors in the declining life expectancy of americans. researchers blame decline on unrelated fees for health care payments and america's reliance on specialty care. if you are pregnant and suffering from morning sickness, we can't help you. but consider a new study from north carolina that concludes women who don't have nausea and vomiting early in their pregnancies are three times as likely to miscarry. researchers are quick to say that symptoms vary from woman to woman and women who don't have morning sickness should not be alarmed. water proof bandages are supposed to protect cuts and scrapes against water and other liquids that can carry germs. consumers unions say most aren't doing the job. group tested eight brands of water proof bandages and found that only two band-aid clear and nextker clear kept out water 60% of the time. consumers union reports many other bandages tested leaked
